Legends long dead haunt the dark once more.

Horrors cast from the world in times long past, transcendent of pain and death, knowing only hunger and hate.

Yet one hope remains, a relic from the distant ages, when man and magic walked as one.

A terrible weapon, shattered into twelve parts and hidden in the far corners of the world to keep it from those who would use it for evil.

Twelve guardians, appointed to watch over the shards into the depths of eternity.

And twelve Powers, given to those of pure heart to pass down through their bloodlines. Powers that would ensure that the weapon could be reassembled should it be needed.

Over time, many without the strength of will to wield these Powers were consumed by them, twisted into monsters of magic and night. Despised and threatened, they fled, drawn to the power of the weapon. Few of the Magi held true, but as the ages passed the numbers of Magi multiplied.

Over time, half of the shards were found - the Seventh Shard through the Twelfth Shard, and none before - and lie in the treasury of a king, waiting for the other half of the weapon to finally drive back the darkness. Only a mysterious map found in the crypt of an ancient ruler gives a clue to the location of the others. A single location, marked with a single '1'.

The First Shard lies in long-forgotten plains, hundreds of leagues from any semblance of civilization. You, one of the Magi, took weeks to journey here through untamed, pathless hills, seeking the Shard. Now a massive, dark stone obelisk stands at the summit of the tallest hill for miles. The mouth of a cave gapes at the base of the obelisk. And here at last do you meet the other four. The other Magi, having arrived at the same time by some twist of fate, driven by honor, glory, prizes, or duty. Here in earnest can the Magi's quest begin.

The Twelve Powers

(Big thanks to Wordweaver for doing a ton of the work developing the Powers)

The Powers are based around the 'three central forces of existence' and the 'four central forms of existence'. They are, respectively, Creation/Change/Destruction and Solid/Liquid/Gas/Plasma. This results in twelve magics or 'Powers'. All Powers rely on the Magi's willpower, and if the one is distracted or disrupted enough that they can't exert sufficient will, they can't use their Power. If a Magi tries to use their powers directly on a being, the defender's willpower will oppose the magic and may cause it to fail. It's a fairly general system, and most of the Powers can be used in many, many ways - creativity can go a long way with some of these.
Create-Solid [Conjuring]
The Magi can create solids in any shape they like. The solid is metallic and unnaturally light in color. Objects must be created within arm's reach and will be stationary upon creation, so they must be moved using musclepower or gravity. Created matter is held together only by willpower and vanishes once you lose focus.
Create-Liquid [Spouting]
The Magi can create a liquid roughly similar to quicksilver in appearance and viscosity, though somewhat lighter and thinner. This must also be created within arm's reach, but unlike Conjuring, the liquid can be imbued with a certain amount of force so as to create waves of liquid, capable of knocking a person off their feet. Created liquid also vanishes once you turn your attention away.
Create-Gas [Bursting]
The Magi can create gas that appears like vaporized steel, dark and suffocating. It must be created, again, within arm's reach, but can be pressurized more than Spouting. The gas may be created inside spaces in an object, potentially resulting in a pressure explosion.
Create-Plasma [Sparking]
The Magi can create plasma within arm's reach. Cannot be pressurized and is as hot as a flame.
Change-Solid [Shaping]
The Magi can reshape objects nearby -within a few meters- fairly quickly, fast enough to be used for things like impaling people or erecting walls to stop pursuers. Objects still don't have any force, though, except for gravity. Softer objects and powdery or granular substances are harder to manipulate.
Change-Liquid [Channeling]
The Magi can reshape liquids nearby, at the same distance as Shaping. Can also be used to make liquids undergo extreme pressurization.
Change-Gas [Gusting]
The Magi can change the shape of Gas nearby, creating short-lived and short-ranged but potentially very strong gusts of wind. A powerful but imprecise Power - subtle manipulations like suffocating a person are not possible.
Change-Plasma [Flaring]
The Magi can preserve plasma, keeping it alive as long as they can exert their will on it, as well as controlling and manipulating its shape, potentially concentrating it into a smaller and hotter form.
Destroy-Solid [Rending]
The Magi can destroy objects they touch. A difficult task in any case, but is harder still when the object is soft or granular. Destroying a living being's flesh is incredibly difficult between the softness of flesh and the victim's will.

The Magi can destroy objects nearby, at a noticeably faster rate than Shaping can affect them. Destroying a living being's flesh is extremely difficult, as the Magi has to battle the victim's will. With more intelligent or powerful beings, affecting them directly is borderline impossible.
Destroy-Liquid [Leeching]
The Magi can dehydrate and dessicate objects nearby, as well as destroying liquids. The will of a living being slows this process when used against it, but willpower alone cannot hold it back for long.
Destroy-Gas [Crushing]
The Magi can destroy gasses nearby. If the Magi touches an object with air pockets inside, they can make the object implode.
Destroy-Plasma [Quenching]
The Magi can extinguish plasma and flames with a touch, as well as being immune to their heat.

Rules

Standard site rules, of course.

Standard RPG rules - don't powerplay, don't metagame, that stuff. I'm sure we're all familiar with these.

Turn-based. A turn is whenever all the players make an action, or whenever a certain amount of time(usually about 48 hours) has passed. If, after the predetermined amount of time has passed, one or more players have not posted, they will either be skipped, automatically assigned an action, or simply killed depending on how many turns the player has missed in a row.

You have four important stats: Your attack, your willpower, your agility, and your AC. Your attack/willpower/agility are all set at +0, and the only way to change them is through loot. Your AC determines what an enemy needs to roll in order to hit you. This is 10 by default, and increase when wearing armour or various enchanted items.

D20. Rolls can go above 20 if you have bonuses, but not below 1. If you roll a 1, no bonuses apply. If you roll a 20, no bonuses apply.

Weaponry: You can start with a weapon or two of your choice.

Armor: Armour increases your AC, making it easier to shrug off hits. Most armour slows you down, however, and can prevent you from escaping an un-blockable threat.

Loot: In terms of loot, you may find enchanted trinkets on your quest. You may wear one large talisman(such as an enchanted sword or shield) and one small amulet(usually a golden circle etched with some sort of image).

Only five six characters can be in play at any time both for balancing reasons and because with a dozen people turns will take forever and be a pain to write. No new characters can join while the party is in one of the Shard dungeons. If you want to play and there's already five six characters or the party is in a dungeon, just do a character sheet and you'll get in whenever there's an open space(read: whenever someone dies). You can submit a character whenever and I'll add you to the waitlist.

If a character dies in a dungeon, no new characters can be added until the dungeon is complete. If everyone dies in the same dungeon? Game over.

The time period for technological advancement is the Middle Ages - swords and bows and stuff, no gunpowder weapons.

Backstory: Halt is a criminal wanted for various reasons after being in many adventures. One of these was killing a young man called Ivan, son of Itaku the Wise Magi, and other was stealing precious prototype of composite mahogany bow. Unfortunately, it broke before Halt had chance to take it. He now wanders and if he thinks he can get a profit on the adventure, like a mercenary, he will join, not by love, but by reward alone.
Other: Has broken prototype of mahogany bow, along with oakwood shortbow and few knifes on sides each. He wears the lightest armour available, which would be leather coat with hood, leather leggings and loincloth, along with quiver for arrows on back and emergency dagger if throwing knifes and bow runs out of ammo/enemy is too close to Halt.

Viewing them as his atonement as well as the usage of the knowledge he had gathered, he now goes forward, looking to help collect them.

Eventually, after 6 months on the street, she was adopted by a passing mercenary crew who helped her to use her power and taught her to fight - with or without weapons. After the leaders of the mercenary crew retired, they gave her a choice - live with them in ease and luxury or go out into the world to explore and fight. Well, you know her decision.
Other: Aria specialises in using a combination fighting style with her channeling power and her short sword. She always carries a water flask which she fills whenever possible.

I don't use this website anymore (although I may check in or post occasionally), and have not for a while now. Sincerest apologies if you were wishing to communicate with me.
The vast majority of the things I have posted on here are old, and I regret them extremely. My attitude (i.e. annoyingness level (i.e. very high)) in such posts are (hopefully) not indicative of my current attitude (i.e. probably considerably less annoying). I thank all of my friends from earlier times here for tolerating my ignorance and idiocy.

I don't use this website anymore (although I may check in or post occasionally), and have not for a while now. Sincerest apologies if you were wishing to communicate with me.
The vast majority of the things I have posted on here are old, and I regret them extremely. My attitude (i.e. annoyingness level (i.e. very high)) in such posts are (hopefully) not indicative of my current attitude (i.e. probably considerably less annoying). I thank all of my friends from earlier times here for tolerating my ignorance and idiocy.

The sun sinks low in the sky, the heat from the previous day waning at last. In the fading light, the obelisk and cave seem even more menacing than they did in the daylight, like the horn and gaping maw of some great skeletal beast. Two unlit torches, set in metal mounts, flank the entrance of the cave.

At last, the five weary Magi crest the top of the hill from different directions. Seeing each other for the first time, so far from any inhabited lands, comes as quite a shock. Perhaps the thought that the others could be enemies crosses their minds.

With the daylight fast fading, they must decide what they are to do.
