((Dogs that rolled less than 14 + 2, the necessary number to have any chance of a hit, were ignored.))

---

Katherine focuses her will into a cluster of the nearest dogs. Her rings glow a dull red, and a grotesque wave of blood bursts outwards in all directions. The dogs stand firm and are unmoved by the force, though their hide is now matted with blood. They approach, snapping at Katherine's legs as she backs away.

And then, one by one, they still. As the beasts collapse in a heap on the cavern floor, Katherine notes their shriveled, perforated hides. Illness or parasites, if she had to guess. From the blood?

(-8 dogs)

No one seems inclined to mount Ugress, so Phet takes off alone. She swoops low over the dogs heads, cutting them down with a jet of flame and a storm of ice.

(-25 dogs)

Damian summons another wall of cold fire. The flame is strong, but terribly misaimed - it barrels down on Adium, who is in the midst of gathering his Magelight. The icy energy sweeping over him shatters his concentration, and a lance of rogue Magelight catches Damian in the chest.
The two mages collapse, Adium hypothermic and Damian in shock.

Pricey Conjures a spiked metal ball akin to a mace-head and hurls it as far as he can. The weapon soars into the pack, only to break harmlessly against the floor.

Keli switches her clockwork bracer to square mode. It does nothing, and the button that usually would activate its powers is inert. The square setting seems to be the "off" mode. Undaunted, she reaches for her quiver.
Her first arrow strikes true, taking a dog between the eyes. So does her second, piercing another's heart. As do her third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth arrows - all landing in vital organs and slaying their targets instantly.

(-8 dogs)

Jack draws Shattered Eternities. The relic hums in his hand, radiating power. Taking a step forward, he performs the necessary cut.
The dagger's blade rips into the veil between worlds, opening a vertical rent in the air. Through it pours the power of storms, manifested in a mighty gale and flashes of lightning.

The wind hurls dogs into the air and smashes them down, incinerates them with bolts and pierces them with hailstones quicker than any arrow. It quickly clears a path through the horde, but its range is limited by the narrow opening of the rift - the dogs on either side of its path remain mostly intact.

(-50 dogs)

The dogs attack. There are more than at first there seemed - some forty remain. Much fewer, but enough to pose a serious threat. They strike, a tidal wave of putrid bones and rotting flesh.

Some try to attack Ugress, leaping upwards and snapping at his legs. The lucky escape with only damaged pride, but others receive a savage kick from giant claws.

Claws scrabble against shield and plate, searching hungrily for openings. There are few to be found. One nicks Jack's arm. A pair strike at Keli, gashing her legs and stomach. Another two target Pricey, scratching at his face and calf. One more bites Katherine in the arm, swiftly letting go as she kicks it away.

Phet pulls the rope on her bombing contraption, loosing a dozen or so lightweed bulbs. They drop into the horde, breaking on impact.

One dog begins frothing at the mouth and tears out the throat of its nearest ally. (-1 dog)

One dog ruptures in a violent explosion of gore, hurling nearby beasts into the walls. (-4 dogs)

One dog's skin begins to glow with a harsh white light.

Lightning: 12 + 5

A bolt of lightning strikes a dog, reducing it to ashes. (-1 dog)

One dog yelps as every tooth in its mouth shatters at once, perforating its flesh with shards of enamel.

The hides of two dogs stretch tight and exhibit a metallic glint.

One dog withers, its limbs and torso becoming even more emaciated than they already were.

A bulb lands amidst a large cluster of dogs. For a moment, it seems to have done nothing.

Then, all at once, the horde implodes. Dogs are dragged, kicking and growling, across the floor and smashed together against their brethren in a pile of flailing limbs and rotting flesh. The pile writhes and twists, accumulating more creatures.

Then it stands, forming into a stout humanoid shape. It rises to one leg, crushing the undead beasts that make up its rudimentary feet. Those that form its upper legs, body, arms, and head continue moving, forced unwillingly into this unliving behemoth.

For a brief moment, each and every dog stills.

The creature's head splits open, and every dog opens its maw at once. A scream, alien and malignant, pierces the air and shakes the stone. Plans of attack are forgotten as the Magi clap their hands to their ears and lower their heads. Ugress makes a swift landing and buries his head beneath his paws.

One dog remains apart from the horde. Its hide shines like the noon-day sun, too bright to look at head-on. Head-mouth closed again and with a deceitfully agile step, the behemoth closes the distance and scoops up the glowing animal. It assimilates quickly, spreading its magical light across the entirety of the titan's exterior. It cannot be seen now, so brilliant is the glow, but the cries of the individual dogs can still be heard through the party's damaged eardrums. They seem to be drawing closer.

Uncertain of their ability to defeat this new terror, the party takes flight. Some more literally than others, in the case of Ugress and Phet. Shielding their eyes from the glow and their ears from the unearthly howls, they dart around the clumsy beast's flanks and flee into the tunnel beyond.

They hear it giving chase and would speed up, were they not already sprinting away as fast as their legs could take them. The rock ceiling grows ever lower as they run, forcing Ugress to continue on foot and Phet to duck her head. The beast gives up, unable to follow down this narrow corridor. Slowly, slowly, the howls and glow fade into the distance.

The party slows, and then stops. They lean against the walls or sit on the ground, coughing and panting. Then they go on.

Not long after, the tunnel gives way to a small, square room. The floor and roof are carved stone, in stark contrast to the roughness of the tunnel walls. Off to the side, a small wooden box rests atop a waist-high pedestal. It appears to be locked.

The tunnel continues on the far side.

Katherine counts her companions. All accounted for.

Phet and Keli work together to deal a wholly unnecessary amount of damage to the small box. It breaks apart, revealing two items within.

The first is a metal triangle hanging from a necklace chain. It resembles the type used as a percussive instrument, though half as large and made of something that resembles blackened iron. It glints dully, reflecting blueish light.

The second is a polished steel amulet in the shape of a ship's anchor. It is cold to the touch, and the faint scent of brine can be detected if one holds it next to their face.
