Path of Crystal

With a wave of his hand, Damian clears the immediate area of mist. Adium snow-swims over to the nearest unbroken tree, using its wood to fashion a new ski.

Fog dispersed, the pair have unobstructed line-of-sight to the mountain peaks that surround the valley. Halfway up a nearby slope can be seen a cave, its entrance glittering with crystal. The way forward, no doubt. With Adium's mobility restored, the two head off.

The going is uneventful at first, until the way begins to slope upwards. With Adium wholly unable to ski uphill, Damian is forced to bend the alpine winds to push him forwards.

Presently the mountainside levels out into a large, flattish terrace. The cave's entrance is still some way onwards and upwards.

GRAAAAAAAAOOooo...

The valley trembles, echoes of a mighty roar reverberating through the mountains.

Day turns to night as a giant shape soars overhead, downdrafts from great wings knocking Adium off his feet.

The beast wheels around, descends, and hovers there over the valley.

It is huge, its wingtips fifty feet apart when outstretched. Its form is like that of a dragon - four powerful legs set beneath itself, with two large wings on its shoulders and a pair of smaller wings at what would be its hips. Its long tail ends in a vicious spike, and four horns jut from its head.

The creature's hide possesses a deadly beauty; its scales a silvery-blue that reflects the waxing moonlight. Its eyes are an icy blue, and what might be bone on a normal animal is replaced by crystal - its fangs, its claws, its tailtip, and the spikes lining the backs of its wings.

The beast roars again, and the temperature on the mountainside drops several degrees. The scales on its head and neck flare out, revealing razor-sharp edges.

Path of Salt

Jake waits, sword at the ready, as the flapping noises fade off down the tunnel. Soon the only noises are the beating of his heart and his quiet, relieved exhalations.

Path of Stone

Jack draws Shattered Eternities and opens a rent to the Realm of Earth. Swiftly growing a wooden shovel, he steps through.

It's pitch-black on the other side, but he can feel soft earth beneath his feet. Digging the shovel in, he sets to work.

No more than six shovels worth of dirt have been transferred when the noise begins. A staccato rhythm of metal against stone, its grating voice sending chills up Jack's spine. The source grows nearer, slow but steadfast in its approach. Jack continues shovelling.

Something curls around Jack's ankle with a cold and slimy embrace. He wastes no time, breaking his shovel over the object while leaping backwards. The tendril recedes, and Jack dives through the portal to close it behind him.

Standing up and dusting himself off, he surveys his prize - a score or so shovel-fulls of earth. It consists of largely crushed rock, its nutrient content sorely lacking. Nonetheless, it suffices to regenerate Jack's remaining wounds and replenish the depleted nutrient supply in the knapsack. While transferring the dirt, he takes notice of the golden key - it lies there dull and inert, casting no light.

Phet touches her charm to the giant's corpse. A black smoke spreads across the body, devouring flesh and bone. Eventuallys the Broken Soul has consumed the giant's entire body, but the time taken to do so does not bode well for a quick transformation in combat.

Keli looks around, but there are no potions nearby. Fortunately, the immediate threats seem to be dealt with and she is safe for the moment.

Path of Iron

Pricey: 20

Halt: 2 + 5

---

Pricey waits, remaining still as a stone and feeling the faint vibrations rumbling through the ground. He lowers himself close to the ground as the tremors strengthen.

The ground erupts beneath him, and Pricey leaps out of the way. With sword in one hand and axe in the other, he spins to face the beast.

He switches the axe's polarity, and shards of blade snap into place atop the haft. The weapon's pull tears a plate from the serpent's hide, and Pricey takes full advantage. Stepping in close, he rams his sword deep into the creature's soft flesh. (-5 Vitality)

He rips his sword back out and steps away as the serpent thrashes, slamming into the ground where he had stood moments before. Halt does not dodge as swiftly, and the serpent crashes down on top of him.

The serpent rises and fills the air with a blood-curdling screech. Halt shakily gets to his feet, favouring a fractured leg.

Path of Crystal

Adium: 9 + 6

Damian: 12 + 5 + 1

Crystal Drake: 8 + 6

---

Adium raises his hand and focuses his magic. Beams of pale blue light lance forward, only to deflect harmlessly off the drake's armoured hide.

Damian sprints forward while drawing Ice and Blood, then jumps, spinning through the air on a cold wind. His blow is powerful but misaligned, and the blade skids off the drake's scales.

The drake's razor claws scythe through the air on a path to decapitate Damian. He dispels the wind and drops out of range, flipping backwards to reorient himself as the drake tucks its wings and gives chase.

Phet takes the key from the bag. It begins to glow softly with a golden light as she raises it to eye level.

The light takes form, shaping itself into a spectral keyhole hovering before her. Wasting no time, Phet thrusts the key into the lock.

She turns it, and an invisible door swings open before her. Beyond is a small cave, supported by rotting wood beams.

Paths' End

Katherine struggles back and forth, hanging upside-down from her feet in the utter darkness. Back and forth. Back and forth. Back and forth.

Without warning the bond around her ankles give way, and she finds herself falling. The drop is not far - she has no time to reorient herself before she lands face-first. Fortunately, there is not stone below but water. Katherine plunges into the water unprepared, inhaling liquid.

The most vile taste she has ever experienced fills her mouth. This water tastes of rot and death. For a moment she thrashes wildly in the water, unsure of which way is up.

She breaks the surface, gasping and spitting. Despite her efforts, the taste steadfastly refuses to release its grip of her tongue.

She can see her surroundings now. Strange. There is no apparent source of light, no sconce or lantern having appeared during her brief time underwater.

A subterranean lake, cold and dark, fills the cavern. Its surface is distorted by small and placid waves, though no wind stirs them. Upon the waves swirl various objects; here the broken hilt of a sword, there a tarnished silver coin. Most common are the bones; skulls and ribs and femurs and leg-bones of various shapes and sizes. All human. Katherine, circling her limbs to keep herself afloat, can neither feel the bottom of the lake nor see into its depths.

Katherine looks up. The roof of this cave, though not far above, cannot be seen. The bodies obscure her view.

Innumerable corpses hang upside-down, suspended from ropes around their feet. They are old, very old, little more than skeletons wrapped in rotting grey cloth and the desiccated webbing that once was flesh. They sway slightly in the breeze that is not there.

At the far end of this accursed cavern, the lake shallows such that one might stand with the surface about their waists. A stone pedestal rises there, bearing a number of objects that cannot be made out through the thick, oppressing mist that permeates this place.

Paths' End

Katherine paddles towards the pedestal, mouth firmly clamped shut and eyes slowly accustoming to the dim light. Close to her destination, she feels smooth stone under her feet and stands, walking the last few feet.

The putrid water is at her waist, while the top of the pedestal is level with her chest. Upon the pedestal rests five objects, carved from grey stone and veined with pale streaks.

The first is a knife. Its stone blade is long, curved, and serrated. The hilt is straight with no guard, wrapped in black leather and with a large spherical ruby as a pommel.

The second is a small rectangular box, held shut with a rusted iron lock.

The third is a thin circlet, with a large ruby set on the forehead.

The fourth is a stone coin, with a strange glyph etched onto each side. Though the glyphs seem to be the same, the corners on one are rounded while the other's are squared.

The last is a tall, ornate goblet, the grey stone ornamented with carved bronze. It is filled to the brim with more of the vile water.

Adium focuses power into his uninjured arm and allows it to roil, consuming his energy. Aiming as far away from Damian as possible, he lets it fly.

Beams of pale blue light crash into the drake's wings, exploding against its silver scales. The magic's force rips into the wings, and the drake begins to fall. It does not loosen its grip on Damian. (-6 Vitality)

Paths' End

Katherine inspects the lock. It's quite old and rusted all the way through - shouldn't take much effort to break it open. She can find no key. Perhaps it lies somewhere at the bottom of this lake. Unwilling to go searching for the key in that filth, Katherine simply strikes the lock open with the knife's pommel.

Inside the small box lie five rings of grey stone, veined with pale streaks. The rings are joined to each other by short iron chains; it seems they are intended to be worn on all the fingers of one hand.

Pricey raises his axe and brings it down on one of the creature's weak points. But the angle of his blade is off, and it leaves only a thin scratch.

The serpent lays its upper body against the ground and sweeps it violently back and forth.

With a great, unpleasant grinding noise, a cloud of airborne metal fill the air. The serpent's movement throws debris this way and that in waves of iron. In the thick of it, unable to escape, cowers Halt.

Sharp shards lash at his skin and heavy plates crash into his limbs. A helmet smashes into his finger, bending it in ways it should not bend. A rusty knife gashes his leg. A broken spearhead lodges into his stomach.

Halt falls to his knees, bleeding profusely, as the storm of iron stops. The serpent looms over him, mouth open wide.
