Rogue

Out of the 436 million people on the planet, approximately 94 million have stolen something at some point or another, be that by shoplifting, burglary, mugging or any other method. Rarely are these people part of an organised unit, of course. Just a casual bit of theft to support the lives of their families and themselves.

There are, however, organised criminals in the world. The most famous of these are the Night Angels. Operating primarily on the island-continent of Cyrondiel, their name is feared everywhere, from the underworld all the way up to the high ranking politicians. Their missions include political assassinations, theft, espionage, murder and behind-the-scenes control of more-or-less everything.

Unfortunately, you aren't in the Night Angels. Or rather, you aren't in the Night Angels anymore. Following the death of nine of his best employees on four separate missions, the mysterious man - known only as the leader of the Night Angels or by his initial, M - withdrew almost entirely out of the country Bramere, one of the nine countries on Cyrondiel.

You, however, elected to stay, along with a select group of members who would continue your activities despite the danger. You are not the Night Angels anymore however. You are unknown, a wild card to everyone. It's time to make yourselves known.

Rules

Obviously the standard RPG and TBG rules (no powerplaying, godmodding, swearing etc etc yadda yadda)

Rolls will be decided through a D20 die, bonuses notwithstanding.

The game will be turnbased, meaning that it's not a first-come-first-served basis. That is, you may post faster than someone but your action will not necessarily be first. Turns will come when a number of circumstances are met - all/most players have posted, at least 48 hours have passed, the GM isn't busy or lazy. :P

You may start with a weapon of your choice but technology is early-middle medieval era, nothing outside of that.

Although rolls are included in the game, tactical preparation, strategy and quick thinking are far more valuable than luck. It would be beneficial to remember this in the future.

This game is not going to play nice. If you make a critical mistake and the dice don't like you, you're dead. There's no resurrection or "The Power of Friendship" here. If you get caught, you're going to receive a trial and sentence, which means a jail-time, an execution, hard labour or whatever else. Better hope your buddies help you in time...

Each class has a special ability. Most are passive, but some are abilities you can use. You can gain more perks by levelling up.

Make your character like a real person. Names must be thematically appropriate, personalities should make sense, backstories should be plausible. And once you choose these, keep in character. It makes the whole thing more enjoyable, for both yourself and for others.

New members can join between missions with a "recruiting" phase if necessary.

Stated once before already, but I'll say it again because of how important it is in this RPG - planning and tactical preparation are the bread and butter of this RPG. You better hope your plan is watertight because if not...

Finally, special thanks to Dark for being the self-described "mechanics guy" and "creative advisor". ;)

Classes

Class: Assassin
Stealthy killers that kill in a single strike. Not particularly deft or charismatic.
Backstab: Guaranteed kill if attacking a person unaware of you

Class: Strongarm
Brutish thugs that beat and bluster their way to victory. Deadly in close combat, but not deft, stealthy, or agile.
Threat: Guaranteed success when intimidating physically weak people

Class: Spy
Charismatic jack-of-all-trades. They can do just about anything well enough, but are unmatched in guile and conning.
Trust: You have a look of trustworthiness about you, and people are willing to tell you more than they might most others.

Class: Sniper
Skilled archers that rarely miss their mark. They are reasonable stealthy, agile, and charismatic, but lack brute strength.
Hawkeye: After spending one turn observing the movement patterns of an unaware enemy, you can shoot them for a guaranteed kill.

Class: Thief
Stealhy burglars that excel in lockpicking, pickpocket, and shimmying up walls or swimming through moats while undetected. Unskilled in combat or diplomacy.
Thief's Eye: You have almost a sixth sense for determining where valuables are hidden.

Class: Infiltrator
Trained to blend into crowds and hide in plain sight, infiltrators are masters of deflecting suspicion. Though their combat skills are lacking, they are very stealthy and charismatic.
Disguise Artist: Within reason, when wearing a disguise that you crafted yourself and acting appropriately, the disguise is nearly impossible to determine as fake.

Class: Hunter
Trained outdoorsmen that are attuned to the natural world. Crack shots with bows, deft with their hands, and stealthy when needed, hunters nonetheless fail at melee combat and high-risk social situations.
Survival: You have intimate knowledge of the wilderness, and can find food and water almost instinctively. You can also detect subtle hints in your surroundings, giving you information when something is amiss.

Backstory: An archer hailing from Canguira (I hope I spelt that right) of Corilvecia, Xander travelled through the continient, mostly staying to the wild for practicing his archery skills alone. He was recruited into the Night Angels when he was 19, in which during his time there, he was known for being one of the shortest members in the group. After his removal from the Night Angels due to the chain of events listed in the first post of this thread, he travelled around, working as a mercenary-for-hire for some time, before happen to come across the select group of pre-Night Angels, trying to get a name for themselves, and joining them.
Appearance: A short man (around 5'4) with meduim-length black hair. Most of the time, he would wear a black shirt, purple undershirt, belt, and black pants. Should he ever have to be in public, he would wear a dark-grey trench coat along with his normal attire. Looks younger than he is (He appears to be around 18~ ish.).

Saro had no wish to manage a wealthy estate, and entrusted the keeping of the Blackwater name to his siblings. Then he left, hoping to escape the grief in Bramere.
There was no respite there, and he soon found himself working for the Night Angels to keep a roof over his head. Reconnaissance at first, but then other things. He had no particular love of murder, but nor was he a paragon of virtue. And besides, the pay was good. But he saved nothing. What he earned was immediately spent on paying the innkeeper, or on clothes, or on good food and drink. Saro has had enough of the noble life.

Black Crow Tavern loomed darkly over the small buildings on the alleys of Valdeseast. A meeting place for half the criminal organisations in the city, the only reason it hadn't been stormed by soldiers was because of well-placed, regular bribery of select members of the government. It hadn't been the meeting place of the Night Angels, but since the previous meeting place had been sold, it was the only available place.

In the corner of the room, four people sat around a table, each warming their hands around a mug of mulled ale and murmuring to each other in low voices.

A flash of movement. All four of them saw it - they were trained criminals after all, they wouldn't have lasted long without a third eye. The movement approached their table.

The man was in his late 30s or early 40s and was of average height with a limp on his right foot. Perhaps a veteran of the war against Seedengenland that had ended nine years prior. His face was under shadow from his hood, but his visible eyes were shifty, constantly looking left and right as if certain that the shadows carried knives.

He arrived at the table, although the clack-clack of his boots carried on for a few more seconds, perhaps shifting at the table awkwardly. He looked at them and they saw his face clearly and recognised him. Radach Aberngo, servant at one of the richest houses in Valdeseast - and former Night Angel informer. After a few more shifty glances to the sides, he finally spoke.

"So, you guys are all that are left of the Night Angels on Bramere, huh? Well here's a good job to start you off. One of my master's clients is in Bramere for a fortnight. His current boast is an antique vase - 156 years old and from Heysouth. A fence I know will buy it for 600 coins. I'll take my usual 20% a-" he paused, "Eh, I'll put the percentage down to 17% since it's your first job. 100 coins for me and 600 for you. What do you think?"

Radach shot a few more glances around before sitting down at the table and waiting for a response.

Dark

"Ah, Radach. Wasn't expecting to see you again. Feeling generous, I see."
Saro slowly taps his mug with a finger. "We need details before there's any agreement. Where is it? Is it under guard? How badly will it be missed?"

Sorry, not accepted.

Names must be thematically appropriate, personalities should make sense, backstories should be plausible.

For starters, the name 'Steve' isn't thematically appropriate, since this RPG is set in early-mid medieval times (comparatively - it's a fantasy world) and Steve was more or less unused until the 1800s. If you really want to stick with a similar name, I'd go with Stephen.

Secondly, the backstory doesn't really match the class and neither does his appearance, really. Being a skilled blacksmith (not weaponmaster, there's no such thing as a weaponmaster), he would have little time to practice archery, whereas his strength would increase as a side effect. His height of 6'4 would also make any sort of thieving difficult, as he'd be very easy to spot. And the steel plate on leather armour would be way too heavy for a sniper to wear, let alone a thief to wear. I'd suggest going strongarm to fix these issues, especially since we already have two snipers on the team.

Finally, a problem with your inventory. Metal arrows do not work. Seriously. Bows just aren't strong enough to shoot a 3kg weight far enough or hard enough to kill anyone or anything. I mean, you can have them if you want, I guess, they just won't be useful. At all. And healing potions are extinct. You can have something like some bandages or a poultice instead.

Fix these issues and you'll be alright.

"Seems good. What's the security around this thing?"

Starmeadows

"I wouldn't see why not," replies Janet.

Dino

Radach nods at Janet before first turning to Saro.

"Of course, however, you will not be offended if I do not reveal the name of the owner or the location of the vase at this point, I hope. In terms of security," he continues, glancing at Pierrot as well, "the vase is protected by four guards patrolling around the area. That's the only protection so it might be a pretty easy steal."

He takes a breath before continuing, "It will obviously be missed, but not as much as some other items in the location. It's not the owner's most valuable item. If you really want to risk it, you can steal something else but there might be more guards as well as other defenses, like nightingale floors. I haven't checked anything else out."

Dark

Saro nods slowly. "I see no issue. Let's put it to a vote, shall we? All in favour?"

He nods before looking around apprehensively again. Grabbing a small piece of parchment and a charcoal pencil from inside his jacket - he had apparently come prepared - he quickly jots down an address. Pushing it towards them on the table, he takes one more look around before standing up.

The parchment has text written on it in clear letters.

"South Holly district, surrounded by red rooftops. Fancy door. Larger than surrounding buildings. Can't miss it."

"I'll meet you back here at this table in two weeks. Good luck," he says. Then, pushing his hood up again, he swerves around the crowd in the tavern and heads out.

"...Welp. Guess we got a job now." Xander sighs, before instinctively reaching to his bag to check if he has his quivers and spare arrows ready. Which they are.
