How to greet a new user
because apparently we don't even know how to do that.

Say "welcome to the TBGs"

See, it's that simple! So how could we screw it up so badly?!

WHAT NEVER TO DO (And yeah, I've seen all of these)

1. Tell them about community drama right off the bat.
Example: "Hey, welcome! By the way, we have a bunch of flamewars going on right now. Have fun on the TBGs!"
This sounds really sarcastic and will likely drive someone away.

2. Warn them about who to look out for.
Example: "Welcome! Have fun around the TBGs, but make sure to avoid X, Y, and Z."
Not only is that hurtful to X, Y, and Z, but most people don't want to be in a community of people that are constantly saying bad things about each other.

3. Automatically suspect them of being a troll alt.
Example: "Ugh, X, why did you make another 'social experiment' account?"
If they actually are a new user, they're probably never coming back.

4. Talk bad about the TBGs right to them.
Example: "This site sucks. It's in your interest to go somewhere else..."
This one seems SO DARN OBVIOUS, but I've seen it happen!

5. Tell them that you hope they don't do anything bad.
Example: "Welcome! I hope you don't break any of the rules!"
Seriously? They're a new user to a friendly internet website targeted at kids, not a new criminal arriving at prison! You have no reason to suspect them of being a bad person!

After this, I expect all new users to be greeted properly and not be driven away by rude TBGers who don't know how to be friendly.

I joked about me saying "heyy" too much, but aside from that I basically just said "Welcome."
