{Plot}

For over two hundred years, the land has suffered under the rule of the Karanian empire and its armies. Taxes are heavy, and dissenters disappear quickly. There are strange and dangerous beasts in the empire's employ.

The Lord Karan's gates are strong, armies vast, arm long. And he is a more powerful sorcerer than any man under the sun. Many rebellions have risen to face him. All perished.

In a dim, dusty room, lit by a single candle, the next, and perhaps final, revolution is born.
An old librarian gathers his allies from across the land, moving slowly and carefully against Karan.
He has something none of the others had. A means to defeat Karan. A way, perhaps, to topple the tyrant of two hundred years.
But first, he has to assemble his team, the sparks to ignite the fire that will burn Karan's kingdom to the ground.

Sometimes, something as insignificant as a memory can mean everything.

{Magic}

Mages use magic by using runes. Runs wear out after being used once, but can easily rewritten and restored if the mage is not in combat.

Healing runes - Heals wounds and poison
Illumination runes - Provides light
Growth runes - Accelerates plant growth
Revival runes - Revives fallen allies (Can only be used on each character once. After that, if they die they're dead.)
Mind runes - Oncea a turn, can increase an ally's next roll (Attack, defense, or agility)by +2 or decrease an enemy's roll by -2(Or decrease an ally's roll, I guess... Don't do that.). Does not consume turn.
Fire runes - Ranged attack
Thunder runes - Ranged attack
Defensive runes - Adds +2 to self or ally's next defensive roll. Can be used once per turn. Does not consume turn.
Earth runes - Melee attack



{Combat}

1d10 game.
In combat, you can perform one action(attacking, trying to escape, healing, defending an ally, etc.). Then the enemy gets to move, so wait until I reply before acting again.

Some classes and magic provide dice modifiers. Class modifiers are permanent. If you get a magic modifier and don't use the modified stat that turn, you waste it.

Some actions don't consume a move- looking around, using certain types of magic, aaaaand...that's pretty much it. You can attack or whatever after you use these.

If an enemy attacks you, you will automatically either dodge or block(Or you can tell me which you'd prefer on your turn.)
Dodging uses an agility roll. If you roll higher than your opponent, you evade all injury. You can only evade once per turn, so don't do it when there's multiple enemies on you.
Blocking uses a defense roll. Injury scales with your roll, and you can block as many times as you get attacked.

I hope this isn't as complicated as it sounds.

{Tier 1}

Warrior Classes

Berserker – Bloodthirsty and fearless fighters, used to heavy axes, swords, and shields. (+ 1 to attack rolls, -1 to defense rolls)
Knight – Honorable warriors, trained to fight on horseback or on foot. Wield swords, spears, and shields. [+1 to defense rolls, -1 to agility rolls]
Shieldbearer – Defensive fighters who wield spears, shortswords, and large shields. (+2 to defense rolls, -1 to attack rolls, -1 to agility rolls)
Footman – Balanced fighters who wield swords, spears, axes, and shields.
Artillery – Heavily armored archers who wield longbows and knives. (+1 to defense, +1 to ranged attacks, -2 to melee attacks, -1 to agility)


Mage Classes

Cleric – Experts on healing, illumination, and growth runes. Wear light or no armor, and wield knives or staffs. (-1 attack)
Mind Mage – Mages who specialize in helping their allies. Usually very charismatic and good with people. Can use mind runes, wear no armor, and wield staffs or knives. (-1 attack)
Fire Mage – Mages who specialize in fire runes. Experts on combat magic, wield staffs. (-2 to melee attack)
Thunder Mage – Mages who specialize in lightning runes. Wield staffs (-2 to melee attack, -1 to defense rolls, +1 to agility rolls)
Earth Mage – Defensive mages. Specialize in defensive and earth runes and wield staffs. (-2 to melee attack, +2 to defense rolls, -1 to attack rolls)


Stealth Classes

Archer – Wields bows or crossbows. (+1 to ranged damage, -1 to defense)
Rogue – Stealthy pragmatists that switch freely between bows and swords. (+1 to agility, -2 to defense)
Thief – Quick and nimble fighters that wield swords and knives. (+2 to agility rolls, -2 to defense)
Monk - Masters of unarmed combat. (+2 to agility, -1 to defense)

{Tier 2}

Warrior Classes

Paladin - Upgrades from Knight, Hoplite, or Cleric. Wears heavy armor and carries swords, spears, and shields. Can use basic healing runes. (+2 to defense rolls, -1 to agility rolls)
Grandmaster – Upgrades from Berserker, Footman, or Monk. Wears light armor and carries swords and knives. (+1 to attack rolls, +1 to defense rolls)
Hoplite – Upgrades from Hoplite or Footman. Wears heavy armor and carries large shields, spears, and swords. (+3 to defense, +1 to attack, -3 to agility)
Warseeker – Upgrades from Berserker. Wields swords, axes, and shields. (+3 to attack, -2 to defense, -1 to agility)

Mage Classes

Priest - Upgrades from Cleric or Mind Mage. Can use healing magic and mind runes. Caries staffs. (-2 to attack rolls)
Life Mage - Upgrades from Cleric. Can use healing, illumination, growth, and revival runes. Can use staffs and swords.
Skald - Upgrades from Footman or Mind Mage. Light or no armor and can use mind runes. Carries swords, spears, and shields. (+1 to attack)
Magic Knight – Upgrades from Knight, Fire Mage, or Thunder Mage. Can use fire or thunder runes. Carries swords, staffs, spears, and shields. (+1 to defense, +1 to attack, -1 to agility)
Magic Tank - Upgrades from Earth Mage. Can wear light armor and use defensive/earth runes. Carries staffs or knives. (+2 to defense, -1 to agility)
Archmage - Upgrades from Thunder Mage or Fire Mage. Can use fire or thunder runes. Carries staffs. (+3 to magic attack rolls, -2 to melee attack, -1 to defense)

Stealth Classes

Bandit - Upgrades from Rogue or Thief. Wields swords and knives. (+1 to agility rolls, +1 to attack rolls)
Assasssin - Upgrades from Thief. Wields swords, knives, and throwing knives. (+2 to agility rolls, +2 to attack rolls, -3 to defense rolls)
Ranger – Upgrades from Rogue or Archer. Specialize in ranged combat and are often woodsmen. Wield bows, knives, and swords. (+2 to agility rolls, +1 to ranged attack, -2 to defense rolls)
Longbowman – Upgrades from Archer or Artillery. Carry longbows. (+3 to ranged attack, -3 to melee attack)
Brawler - Upgrades from Monk. Master of unarmed combat. (+3 to agility, +1 to attack, -3 to defense)
Renegade - Upgrades from Monk, Thief, or Rogue. Can use swords,  spears, and knives. (+1 to attack, +1 to agility)

No powerplaying, metagaming, don't be a jerk, standard RPG rules.
One character per person for now. Might increase once I see how difficult this is to run. Forget that, make it two.
You start with a Tier 1 class - you can upgrade later
If you die, sorry, time to make another character. The only way to return is to have a Life Mage revive you. If you don't have one in your group, then rip. Or maybe you can hire a Life Mage somewhere?
The classes are all basically the same outside of combat; you can give your character skills like lockpicking or first-aid if you want, regardless of class.
I'm not very good at this, so cut me some slack pls

Backstory(Optional): Drafted into the empire's armies at 19, he spent a year getting into fights and watching the empire commit its evils, coming soon to hate it. He then escaped and went into hiding until the call for rebellion found him.

After participating in a certain number of encounters, everyone'll get to upgrade their class, then the enemies start getting harder :]
You might be stuck with your tier 1 for a while, depending on how it goes, so try and pick one you won't regret.

The room is dark, lit only by a single candle. It smells of mildew and old books. Around a table in the gloom, Alfonce the librarian counsels the seven rebels on their task.
The old man unfolds a map on the table, pointing to two locations. They're quite far apart. Several cities and numerous small towns dot the space in between.
"This is you. This is Karan," he says, indicating the two points.
